Following his minority government win, Prime Minister Mark Carney has spoken with French President Emmanuel Macron and U.S. President Donald Trump.

Macron: “Today, the Prime Minister, Mark Carney, spoke with the President of France, Emmanuel Macron.
President Macron congratulated Prime Minister Carney on his election. Following the Prime Minister’s meeting with the President in Paris last month, the two leaders discussed their ongoing work to deepen defence and commercial ties between their nations. They agreed to remain in close contact.”
Trump: “Today, the Prime Minister, Mark Carney, spoke with the President of the United States, Donald J. Trump.
President Trump congratulated Prime Minister Carney on his recent election. The leaders agreed on the importance of Canada and the United States working together – as independent, sovereign nations – for their mutual betterment. To that end, the leaders agreed to meet in person in the near future.”
Carney’s first overseas trip as Prime Minister was to France in mid-March. Carney met with Macron and later had an audience with King Charles III before meeting UK PM Keir Starmer. Carney referred to Canada as the “most European of the non-European countries”, as he sought to deepen ties with Canada’s traditional allies as our relationship with the United States deteriorates amid Donald Trump’s annexation threats and tariffs. The Prime Minister will now seek to walk a fine line between maintaining some semblance of Canada-US ties while moving closer to European nations, many of whom face similar pressure from the US.
