In his first press conference following the Liberal victory in the 2025 federal election, Prime Minister Mark Carney promised a government focused on addressing Canada’s core challenges, including tariffs, housing, crime, and sovereignty.
The Prime Minister will meet with the U.S. President in Washington on Tuesday, while the cabinet will be sworn in on May 12th. Parliament will return on May 26. The Prime Minister announced that King Charles III will deliver the Throne Speech on May 27, a strong expression of support for Canada’s status as a sovereign nation. This will be influential in confronting annexationist U.S. rhetoric, given the U.S. President’s high regard for the Royal Family. Carney also reiterated campaign promises such as utilizing taxpayer dollars to catalyze private sector housing investment, making bail more difficult to obtain for criminals, strengthening the Canadian Armed Forces, and shifting spending towards capital investment rather than operating costs.
The Prime Minister pledged no cuts to transfer payments to provinces, and promised to eliminate interprovincial trade barriers by July 1st. The government will cap temporary foreign workers and international students at 5% of Canada’s population by 2027.
Throughout the press conference, Prime Minister Carney struck a conciliatory note, promising to call a byelection as soon as possible if a Conservative MP steps aside for Pierre Poilievre, rather than waiting up to 180 days as the law allows. Carney further noted he would seek to collaborate with other parties, but would not form an official governing pact with the NDP.
