Following days of escalating conflict, India and Pakistan have agreed to a ceasefire.
India’s foreign secretary issued the following statement:
“The Director General of Military Operations of Pakistan called the DGMO of India at 1535 hours earlier this afternoon, it was agreed between them that both sides would stop all firing and military action on land, in the air and sea, with effect from 1700 hours IST today. Instructions have been given on both sides to give effect to this understanding. The DGMOs will talk again on the 12th of May, at 1200 hours,”
Pakistan’s deputy prime minister and foreign minister issued the following statement online:
“Pakistan and India have agreed to a ceasefire with immediate effect. Pakistan has always strived for peace and security in the region, without compromising on its sovereignty and territorial integrity!”
Military officials from both nations have said they will adhere to the ceasefire.
This is welcome news, as the conflict had been headed in a dangerous direction. Fighting had expanded beyond the disputed Kashmir region, and the prospect of two nuclear-armed nations entering into a full-scale war raised the stakes for the entire world.

If this piece left you clearer than it found you, that's the point. I write for readers who want to think past the week, to see the longer pattern beneath the daily story, and to come away steadier rather than more agitated.
That longer view gets built somewhere. On Patreon, essay by essay, I'm constructing The Long Work, a body of analysis meant to outlast the news cycle that prompted it. The readers there make it possible. No subsidies, no strings. The work answers to them.
$8/month to read it as it's built, and to have a hand in building it.
