The Canadian Government must buy high-quality ear protection for every member of the Canadian Army

Get it done ASAP.

Budget 2025 has passed, and with it, a significant increase in defence spending is now entrenched. But it’s one thing to approve military spending, and another thing to turn that spending into real military capabilities.

And with Canada’s broken procurement system, the challenge is magnified. Further, to ensure strong ongoing military recruitment, the government must make it clear that increased defence spending will lead to CAF members being well-equipped.

One way to move in this direction would be to buy high-quality ear protection for every member of the Canadian Army. As noted by Policy Hawk on Twitter, considering the significant spending increases, providing such ear protection would be a drop in the bucket:

“$25m for hearing protection is something the government should be able to do in a week.

Every Veteran I work with has hearing loss. I’m sure it costs more than $25m/year in benefits.

If we can’t do this, how are we going to spend the amounts this government says they’ll spend?”

If you look on Reddit or the Canadian Army forum, you’ll see CAF members talking about buying their own ear protection, which is absurd given that Canada can easily afford to buy high-quality ear protection for every member of the Army. And that’s even more true given the big defence spending boost passed in the budget. So, let’s pressure the government to get this done ASAP. Contact your MP and encourage them to make this a top priority.

If this piece left you clearer than it found you, that's the point. I write for readers who want to think past the week, to see the longer pattern beneath the daily story, and to come away steadier rather than more agitated.

That longer view gets built somewhere. On Patreon, essay by essay, I'm constructing The Long Work, a body of analysis meant to outlast the news cycle that prompted it. The readers there make it possible. No subsidies, no strings. The work answers to them.

$8/month to read it as it's built, and to have a hand in building it.
