Trump’s insane tariff threats against Europe vindicate Carney’s deal with China

Unfortunately, it has come to this. It would be far preferable for Canada to only deepen trade with democratic nations, and we should not be naive about the potential risks of trading more with China. But the unhinged actions of the U.S. President, and the clear reality that any deal signed with the U.S. can be abrogated by Trump at a moment’s notice, show that the Canadian Government is doing the right thing by making deals with China, along with democratic allies like the EU, South Korea, and others.

Prime Minister Mark Carney’s trade deal with China – which will remove tariffs on some Canadian canola products, seafood, and peas, in return for lowering tariffs on Chinese EVs and allowing 49,000 of those EVs into Canada – has received both praise and criticism. On the side of praise have been Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe, many Western Canadian agricultural producers, and the many Canadians who want to see our country reduce its dependence on the United States. On the side of criticism are the many Canadians who have legitimate concerns about China’s human rights record and attitude towards Canada, and those who are concerned about the impact China’s EVs will have on the Canadian auto sector. Those are real concerns, and those expressing them are acting in good faith.

There is another group of critics. Mostly made up of individuals on the populist right, that group previously criticized Carney for not getting a deal with China, and now criticizes him for getting a deal. This group has sought to deliberately misinterpret comments about a ‘new world order’ and, at times, subtly (and not so subtly) have echoed the rhetoric of those seeking the U.S. annexation of Canada. This group repeatedly blames Canada for U.S. President Donald Trump’s unreliability, and generally pretends Trump doesn’t exist, so they can falsely claim that Canada is the one that has created a trade rupture with the U.S. That group was especially critical of Canada’s trade deal with China.

But now, the deal Carney got with China, and the overall strategy of deepening trade with non-U.S. partners, has been vindicated by the latest insanity from the U.S. President. As you can see below, Trump is now threatening to impose tariffs on countries sending troops to Greenland:

Remember, the European Union and the United States signed a trade deal that was heavily weighted in favour of the U.S. The EU accepted 15% tariffs on its products, while not applying tariffs to the U.S., though this hurts U.S. consumers since tariffs are a tax; it was seen as a big EU concession. Yet, Trump shows that signing a deal with him is worth nothing by threatening tariffs for an absurd reason. European countries are sending troops to Greenland to defend the territorial integrity of Greenland and Denmark, and to address U.S. concerns over there supposedly not being enough NATO military assets in the region. Yet, Trump responds to that move by threatening the countries that are stepping up, showing that his word means nothing, and making clear that his concerns regarding NATO’s presence in the North are nothing more than a veil for his desire to annex the island.

So, those blaming Canada for not signing a deal with the U.S. have again been proven completely incorrect. Even securing a deal with the U.S. means nothing, as it could be undone on a whim. Thus, the Canadian Government has been vindicated in its effort to sign deals with the EU, China, South Korea, and other partners. With such an unreliable neighbour to the south, Canada must look elsewhere.

  1. Over 150+ countries in the world & Carnage has to make deals with evil China ? India is the most populated country in the world now, what about India ? Now Canada will have more organized criminals from China coming here to operate sales for their EV’s, service plants etc. & they will NOT hire Canadians. Marxist Carnage is doing everything he can possibly think of to sabotage Canada’s relationship with Trump & the US. Thanks liberal voters.
