Hypocrisy: Trump – who threatened Canada for signing a trade deal with China – is bragging about his ‘great’ personal relationship with Xi and is pushing for more US-China trade

U.S. President Donald Trump recently threatened to impose a 100% tariff on Canada, ostensibly due to Canada signing a trade deal with China (a deal that simply returned Canada-China trade close to where it was before Canada imposed tariffs on Chinese EVs at the request of the U.S.). The threat was later walked back with U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent claiming the tariff threat would only go into effect if Canada signed a full free trade deal with China, something that has not been under consideration.

Even after the threat was walked back, Trump has continued to mock Canada and claim that Canada is being taken over by China. Trump also criticized the United Kingdom – and Canada again – when asked about U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer visiting China, saying it was “very dangerous”:

“Arriving at the premiere of the Melania film on Thursday, the US president was asked by a reporter: “What do you think about the UK going into business with China?”

Beyond his brief comments, Trump did not say anything further about the UK’s engagement with China, pivoting instead to Canada and delivering a similar warning.

He said it was “even more dangerous, I think, for Canada”.

“Canada is not doing well. They’re doing very poorly, and you can’t look at China as the answer,” he added.”

And yet, as you can see in the ‘Truth Social’ post below, Trump is more than happy to brag about increasing U.S.-China trade:

On Twitter, former Alberta Premier and Harper Government Cabinet Minister Jason Kenney noted the hypocrisy of Trump’s attitude toward trade with China:

“Trump keeps threatening Canada for having a conventional trade relationship with China.

Meanwhile, he is a huge fan of the Communist dictator Xi, and craves a “big deal” with Beijing.

He is selling them advanced AI chips, running his Trump token grift on a dark Chinese exchange, and says invading Taiwan is “up to Xi.”

Instead of coordinating a global coalition of democracies to challenge China’s rapacious trade practices, belt and road initiative, territorial aggression, massive human rights violations etc., he has simultaneously pushed US allies to normalize trade relations with Beijing. At the same time, he has become increasingly obsequious to the Chinese Communist leadership.”

Blaming Canada continues to be absurd

The small percentage of people in this country who continue to absurdly blame Canada for the Trump-caused trade war have recently used the Canada-China trade deal as an excuse for spreading Trump’s rhetoric and siding with the U.S. against Canada. Yet, those same voices are silent on Trump’s hypocrisy, ignoring the fact that Trump feels perfectly entitled to trade with China, make concessions to China, and regularly praises Xi.

Trump’s criticism of Canada isn’t really about China; rather, it’s about Trump wanting Canada to remain dependent on trade with the U.S., so he can more easily inflict economic pain on our country and try to rob us of our sovereignty. Canadians must push back against that, and those who spread Trump’s false rhetoric seeking to undermine our nation need to be called out.
