Poilievre to outline approach to Canada-US relations, will reportedly mention Trump by name

CBC report indicates the Conservative Leader will also push for an all-party CUSMA working group.

Pierre Poilievre’s upcoming speech on Canada-US relations will include a step he has been largely unwilling to take: Mentioning U.S. President Donald Trump by name. That’s according to a CBC report based on a preview of the speech given by Pierre Poilievre’s office:

Pierre Poilievre’s office says his Thursday speech on US-Canada relations will include new proposals:

1) New Canadian Strategic Energy + Mineral Reserve

2) Requiring companies that move Canadian IP offshore to repay any taxpayer support received
(1/2)

3) New tariff-free Auto Pact with the U.S.

4) All-party CUSMA working group

will also include references to the U.S. president by name. (2/2)

Those proposals are a step in the right direction, and – if combined with a tougher line against Trump – would represent a significant improvement in the Conservative message. It also comes at a time when the CPC’s long-standing approach of largely ignoring Trump (and off-message moves like MP Jamil Jivani’s ‘blame Canada’ tour), hasn’t worked out for them, with CPC support falling as the Liberals are extending their lead in national polls and even closing the gap in Alberta.
