Trump Admits Adding Late Changes to Trade Deal, Further Discrediting His Misguided Defenders in Canada

Trump will always humiliate those who defend him. Amazingly, some of the pro-Trump right-wing influencers still don’t get the message.

Time and time again, the pro-Trump right-wing influencers in Canada side with Donald Trump against their own country, only to be made fools of when Trump admits to the actions they denied. Yet, the lesson isn’t learned, and the cycle begins again.

And so it is with the breakdown in Canada-U.S. trade talks. Following the breakdown, which reports show was a result of last-minute U.S. demands that would have stripped Canada of much of our economic sovereignty, the pro-Trump influencers sought to blame the Canadian Government, and gave Trump a free pass. Conservative MP Jamil Jivani sought to demonize Prime Minister Mark Carney and Ontario Premier Doug Ford, calling them “Liberal politicians” and saying they “put their political self-interests ahead of Canadian workers.” There was no criticism of Trump whatsoever.

Unsurprisingly, such perspectives have been fully discredited, as defenders of Trump always are. As reported by CNN, “Trump suggested in a brief call with CNN’s Jim Sciutto that the US had added conditions in the 11th hour. “That sounds like me,” Trump responded when asked about Canadian officials’ assertions that the US made late-stage demands, adding, “they have to pay a fair amount. And if they don’t pay a fair amount, we won’t make a deal. That’s fine.”

While Trump is, of course, a notorious liar, he is well-known for being an unethical negotiator and failing to live up to signed agreements. So, to see him admit that he added last-minute conditions to the agreement discredits those in Canada who had been defending him and trying to pin the blame on our country.

They will almost certainly fail to learn from this, and will be back to siding with Trump against Canadians in short order. Still, the rest of us need to see what’s happening and be ready to stand up against their propaganda as Canada navigates the trade war Trump is inflicting upon us.
