Employment Insurance Claims Surge To 500,000

That’s for this week alone.

In a sign of the economic devastation caused by the Coronavirus which spread from China, there have been a whopping 500,000 Employment Insurance claims this week alone.

Last year at this time there were 27,000.

It appears to be the biggest amount of EI claims ever recorded in a single week.

The government says they’re working to strengthen the system for making claims, due to the massive surge in demand.

They are also speeding up the claim process, waiving the one-week waiting period and expanding the number of people who can receive benefits in response to the unprecedented crisis.
