City Of Calgary Backs Off Crazy Plan To Remove Canada Day Fireworks

Fireworks display is back on following a massive public backlash.

Following a massive public backlash, the City of Calgary has backed off their plan to cancel Canada Day fireworks.

Here’s what they said in a statement:

“We have heard from many Calgarians as well as members of City Council that while the pilot program is valued, they would also appreciate an aerial fireworks display to celebrate on July 1,” said David Duckworth, City Manager. “We are working with partners to confirm an appropriate site and will share details as they become available.”

The City remains committed to considering cultural sensitivities while respecting the diverse make-up of Calgary. These and other considerations, such as concerns about late-night traffic, noise, over-crowding, wildlife, and the environment will be factored into the decision on a final location for the aerial fireworks display.

As part of Canada Day 2023, The City will offer diverse, educational and inclusive programming for Calgarians to celebrate culture and community. Plans to feature an enhanced pyrotechnic show at Fort Calgary will move forward, including a display of lights and sounds that will be launched from the main stage at Fort Calgary during the headliner act.

“Programming will be a mix of participatory, celebratory, and reflective experiences,” said Jeff Chase, Director of Partnerships with The City of Calgary. “Calgarians will have a variety of options to observe July 1 in a way most meaningful to them.”

Hiding an extreme agenda

The City of Toronto recently made a similar move, backing down on the cancellation of Canada Day fireworks under immense pressure.

While it is good to see both the City of Calgary and City of Toronto back down, the fact that they tried it in the first place tells you everything you need to know.

Over and over again, we see municipal politicians campaign as moderates focused on basic city services, and then push a radical far-left agenda once they get into power.

Some of the rhetoric being used by Calgary was quite radical and obviously out of step with most Calgarians.

Below, you can read a previous statement issued by the city before they backed down:

“This year we’re testing out a new way of closing out Canada Day festivities that addresses some of the cultural, community and environmental impacts previously experienced with traditional Canada Day fireworks, said Franca Gualtieri, Manager of Arts & Culture at The City of Calgary. “Over the next year, we’ll engage with citizens, community groups and cultural groups to collect feedback to understand Calgarians’ preferences for Canada Day programming which will help guide future decisions around Canada Day fireworks.”

The City recognizes the cultural sensitivities around fireworks displays in relation to Truth and Reconciliation. This year, July 1 also marks the 100th anniversary of the Chinese Immigration Act. For many Calgarians this is a day of mourning or reflection.”

At a time when our country faces growing threats from both within and without, and at a time when we need to strengthen national confidence and build our national defenses, our ‘leaders’ are doing everything they can to demonize our country and turn Canadians against our own history and values.
