Insanity.
One of the strangest and most disturbing trends we’ve seen under the Liberal government is how they simply decide that what worked for generations no longer works for some unknowable reason.
For example, they talk about how we can’t ‘arrest our way’ out of crime, or how we can’t ‘cut our way’ to lower deficits, while crime surges and deficits go on as far as the eye can see.
They have done the same with drug policy.
Objectively, overdose deaths are increasing dramatically – especially in the places that have implemented the most extreme so-called ‘safe supply’ policies.
And yet, while common-sense demands a return to treatment for addicts and harsh punishments for those who supply illegal drugs, the government instead decides to double-down, triple-down, and even quadruple-down on simply giving out illegal drugs to addicts. And no matter how much it fails, they keep doing the same thing.
That’s how we end up with scenes like that below, showing the Liberal Minister for the Opioid Crisis refusing to oppose the provision of recreational fentanyl to children:

The only common-sense answer here would be to say that fentanyl should never be provided to children.
It is an illegal drug.
Children should not be provided with illegal drugs.
It’s not complicated.
And yet, the Liberals have gone so far in such an extreme direction that even the most basic truths are beyond their comprehension.
