WATCH: Garnett Genuis Says Conservatives Strongly Support Ukraine

“We strongly support Ukraine. We also oppose the carbon tax,” said Genuis.

Justin Trudeau and the Liberals – with a big assist from much of the media – have pulled off one of the most impressive ‘poison pills’ in history.

By putting a carbon tax in an updated Canada-Ukraine Free Trade Agreement, the Liberals left the Conservatives with two choices – both of which the Liberals could take advantage of.

Had the Conservatives voted for the agreement, they would be criticized by their own base for abandoning opposition to the carbon tax – even though opposing a carbon tax domestically and voting for a trade deal that contains one are different things. 

Had the Conservatives voted against it – which they ended up doing – they could be criticized for ‘opposing Ukraine’ – even though opposing a trade deal due to a carbon tax is not the same as blanket opposition to a country.

But, since explaining those differences takes time, and since we are a society where detailed explanations and an understanding of nuance are quite rare, the Conservatives have been on the defensive on the issue.

The media has chosen not to explain the idea of the ‘poison pill,’ and have played a role in advancing the Liberal narrative. Even as the Conservatives pushed for easier arms exports to Ukraine and pushed for sending over 80,000 rockets to Ukraine (that are currently slated for disposal), much of the media continued to promote the Liberal narrative that cast the Conservatives as anti-Ukraine.

But it’s a false narrative, and it deserves to be challenged.
