The NDP don’t like to be called Communists, yet they keep acting like them.
It’s one thing to disagree with an industry and denounce it.
That’s part of free expression.
We are even free to try and turn others against an industry and demand policy changes.
However, when an MP proposes jailing people for supporting the oil & gas sector, you can be sure that things have taken a very disturbing turn.
And that’s exactly what NDP MP Charlie Angus is proposing with Bill C-372.
The bill would make it a criminal offence to promote the oil & gas sector.
Here are sections six and seven of the bill:
Prohibition
6 It is prohibited for a person to promote a fossil fuel, a fossil fuel-related brand element or the production of a fossil fuel except as authorized by the provisions of this Act or of the regulations.
False promotion
7 (1) It is prohibited for a person to promote a fossil fuel or the production of a fossil fuel in a manner that is false, misleading or deceptive with respect to or that is likely to create an erroneous impression about the characteristics, health or environmental effects or health or environmental hazards of the fossil fuel, its production or the emissions that result from its production or use.
And Angus wants severe punishments for those who promote Canadian oil & gas:
Product and promotion offences — producer
15 (1) Every producer who contravenes section 6 is guilty of an offence and liable
(a) on conviction on indictment to a fine not exceeding $1,000,000 or to imprisonment for a term not exceeding two years, or to both; or
(b) on summary conviction to a fine of not more than $500,000 or to imprisonment for a term not exceeding one year, or to both.
Promotion offences — other persons
(2) Every person, other than a producer, who contravenes section 6 is guilty of an offence and liable on summary conviction to a fine not exceeding $500,000.
This is what we would expect to see in a Communist or Fascist regime.
This also demonstrates the NDP giving up on the idea of democracy itself.
Canadians are increasingly souring on the ‘green agenda,’ realizing that the carbon tax hurts our standard of living while doing nothing in terms of global emissions.
Canadians are also realizing that the oil & gas sector remains incredibly important and is a key driver of our national security, prosperity, and the security of our allies.
And so, unable to win the argument in the court of public opinion, the NDP is seeking to weaponize the power of the government against oil & gas sector owners, workers, and supporters.
It is deeply un-Canadian, and we must vehemently resist it.
