WHOOPS: Liberal Minister Promotes Chart Showing Auto Thefts Declined Under Harper & Surged Under Trudeau

What was Marc Miller thinking?

In an attempt to make some kind of point, Liberal Immigration Minister Marc Miller shared a chart showing auto thefts declined under former Prime Minister Stephen Harper while surging under Trudeau.

Here’s the full chart shared in the post Miller referenced:

The chart shows auto thefts declining nearly every year Stephen Harper was in power.

Harper became Prime Minister in 2006, and left in 2015.

There were 158,638 auto thefts per year when he became PM, and 78,800 the year he left.

The rate of auto thefts per 100,000 went from 487.06 to 220.71

By contrast, auto thefts went from 78,800 in 2015 to 105,673 in 2022 under Trudeau.

The rate of auto thefts per 100,000 has gone from 220.71 to 271.44

Now, considering that the Conservatives sought to toughen the justice system – imposing tougher penalties for a wide range of crimes, and considering that the Liberals reversed many of those measures, it is logical to draw the following conclusion:

Conservative ‘tough-on-crime’ policies coincided with a decline in auto theft in Canada, while Liberal ‘soft-on-crime’ policies coincided with an increase in auto theft in Canada.

The fact that Miller would share this chart and think he’s making a point is baffling.

The chart provides clear evidence that Liberal policies are failing, and that we must return to tough on crime policies if we are to start bringing down the rate of auto theft again.
