MP Bob Zimmer Warns Canadians The Government Is “All Talk & No Action” On NORAD Modernization

With threats to Canada and our allies rapidly proliferating, we cannot afford to waste time.

There aren’t many votes to be found in talking about military spending or threats from hostile foreign nations.

People are understandably more focused on day-to-day issues, particularly issues of affordability, healthcare, and economic growth.

However, if our country is not secure, if our alliances are not strong, and if our military is not equipped to defend us, everything else – including our sovereignty – could be lost.

After all, if we were to be plunged into a global war – a war that could quite conceivably include Russian planes bombing our country, Russian ships/submarines attacking our naval assets, and Russian/Chinese troops seeking to seize sovereign Canadian territory in the North – we would be rapidly forced to shift our economy into a war footing.

And doing so at the last minute – when it’s already almost too late – would be far less efficient, since we would be desperately buying whatever equipment we could and desperately trying to recruit and train new personnel.

This means that the best time to start preparing for war is now.

It also means that those who are pushing for a stronger national defence – like Conservative MP Bob Zimmer – deserve a lot of credit.

On Twitter, Zimmer posted a video filmed at the North Warning System Site in Cambridge Bay.

As Zimmer noted, much of the equipment at the facility is too old, and much of the needed equipment has not been procured yet.

And so, despite the big spending promises, it would appear the much-touted ‘modernization’ of Canada’s NORAD systems is not happening:

“NORAD MODERNIZATION STALLED UNDER TRUDEAU: The PM and his NDP/Liberal government all talk and no action on Arctic sovereignty while Moscow and Beijing ramp up. Canada needs a PM and government that takes our security seriously.”

Zimmer is right to be bringing this up, because we don’t have a moment to lose when it comes to enhancing our defences.

Just today, Republican Congressman Mike Turner – the head of the U.S. House Intelligence Committee – issued a cryptic warning on a threat he believes should be made public:

Subsequent information indicates the threat is from Russia, as they seek to deploy a weapon that could take out satellites – something that would almost certainly be one of the opening acts of a new world war:

“The head of the House Intelligence Committee disclosed Wednesday that members of Congress had access to information about an unspecified “serious national security threat,” issuing a vague warning that prompted other lawmakers to downplay the urgency of the situation and urge the public to remain calm.

The revelation from Rep. Mike Turner, an Ohio Republican and the chairman of the House Intelligence panel, came in a cryptic statement issued by the committee, in which he encouraged President Biden to declassify all information relating to the threat. It did not contain any details, except to announce that the committee “has made available to all members of Congress information concerning a serious national security threat.”

“I am requesting that President Biden declassify all information relating to this threat so that Congress, the Administration, and our allies can openly discuss the actions necessary to respond to this threat,” Turner said.

One U.S. official told CBS News that the intelligence in question relates to Russian capabilities in space.

U.S. officials told CBS News that Russia is developing a nuclear-capable weapon that could take down U.S. satellites, knocking out the ability to communicate, but there is no evidence a weapon has actually been deployed.”

Russia may be working towards the deployment of such a weapon – as recent space launches indicate:

“The threat described does not involve an active capability, though the issue is considered significant.

A U.S. official, who was not authorized to discuss the information publicly, pointed to a series of Russian space launches known as Cosmos, many of which carry classified Ministry of Defense payloads.”

The fact of the matter is that Russia and China have made it abundantly clear they intend to weaken the Western world in every way they can – whether through military aggression, nuclear intimidation, or through the exploitation of our internal divisions to keep us divided and off-balance.

Russia continues to ramp up their military spending in the arctic, and China is referring to itself as a ‘near arctic state,’ as they seek control over the significant amount of natural resources in the region.

In the face of this escalating and potentially existential threat, we must take our national defence interests seriously, and we should be grateful to see MPs like Bob Zimmer standing up for the security of our country.

With that in mind, if you support Zimmer bringing attention to the need for a stronger national defence, I encourage you to contact his office and express those thoughts. It is important for MPs to hear that there are many Canadians who really do value the work being done to address the escalating threats facing our nation.
