Trudeau’s numbers keep dropping.
Justin Trudeau may still be in control of the Liberal Party and their increasingly cult-like base, but among the broader Canadian public his popularity continues to decline.
According to a new Nanos Research survey, just 24% of Canadians pick Justin Trudeau as their choice for preferred Prime Minister.
Meanwhile, 28% pick Pierre Poilievre.
19% pick Jagmeet Singh, and 3% pick Elizabeth May & Maxime Bernier respectively.
The poll was conducted May 5th. The same questions were asked April 28th, and Trudeau has declined 2 points since then.
The fact that he now trails Pierre Poilievre by 4 points on the question of the best choice for Prime Minister is a big sign of Trudeau’s declining popularity.
A sitting PM usually has a strong advantage on that question, simply by virtue of holding the position. The PM gets to give speeches as the Prime Minister, attend events with other world leaders, and the trappings of the office often convey a sense of authority and gravitas.
Meanwhile, the position of Opposition Leader tends to be much less ‘glamorous,’ with the role necessitating near-constant criticism of the government, which many people see as being ‘too negative.’
So, when an Opposition Leader takes the lead over the sitting PM, it tells us that the public is getting ready to move on from who is currently in power.
It seems clear that Liberal internal polling is showing them something similar, as Trudeau’s attacks on Pierre Poilievre are getting more and more unhinged and desperate. The Liberals are even going back to the abortion well, which is always a sign that they are afraid of losing:

Impact of China interference scandal
Pierre Poilievre has been competitive with Justin Trudeau on the preferred PM question since becoming CPC Leader. Trudeau falling behind has coincided with the Chinese Communist election interference scandal.
Now, Trudeau was unpopular before that scandal, but that story really dropped his numbers to a new low.
The reason for this is that it goes beyond the usual stories of dishonesty or corruption, but it cuts to the very heart of whether our country is actually sovereign, and whether our leaders actually work for us or work for foreign powers.
Canadians have seen a more disturbing side of Justin Trudeau, and the more they see it the less willing they are to support him.
