Gerretsen’s isn’t making the point he thinks he’s making.
Having tried out the “you’re racist,” tactic, some Liberal MPs are now turning to “blame Harper.”
It’s a sign of how the Liberal government is struggling to come up with any kind of coherent response to the China interference scandal.
In what may be the most egregious attempt at spin, Liberal MP Mark Gerretsen sought to blame former Prime Minister Stephen Harper for China donating to the Trudeau Foundation.
What makes Gerretsen’s remarks such a ‘self-own’, is that he starts out by perfectly describing China’s attempt to influence Justin Trudeau.
He points out that China thought Trudeau had a good chance of becoming Prime Minister, and sought to influence him by donating $1 million to the Trudeau Foundation.
Yet, rather than acknowledge how bad that looks for Justin Trudeau – given that China evidently saw the future PM as manipulable – Gerretsen inexplicably blames Stephen Harper for it.
It’s the kind of leap of logic that would require a parachute to land safely.
You can watch Gerretsen’s remarks below:
“Liberal MP Mark Gerretsen says Tories don’t want to look at the 2015 election because the CCP $$$ donation to the Trudeau Foundation took place during the Harper years.”

Gerretsen certainly made a point with his remarks, but it’s not the point he thinks he’s making.
