Mark Gerretsen Caught Lying, Gets Called Out By Twitter Community Notes

The truth-challenged Liberal MP claimed Chiefs of Staff have only testified after they were out of government. He was quickly proven wrong.

Yesterday, I wrote about how the Liberals are getting more and more desperate, and their lies are getting less and less competent as a result. That was written in response to Liberal House Leader Mark Holland lying about Pierre Poilievre, and Mark Gerretsen lying on Twitter.

And now, Gerretsen has been called out for lying again. The Liberal MP (who badly struggles with the truth), claimed that Chiefs of Staff to the Prime Minister have only testified in front of committees once they were out of that role. But that’s not even close to being true.

Gerretsen’s Tweet was quickly called out using Twitter’s Community Notes feature. This allows people to append greater context to a Tweet in order to show how it may be misleading people. Overtime, people can vote on whether or not the Community Note is helpful, which ensures that false corrections don’t stay up for long.

In Gerretsen’s case, he was so completely off-base with the truth that the Community Note demolished his entire claim with ease, as you can see below:

Mark Gerretsen Lies

The idea that Gerretsen didn’t seem to know this is quite stunning. And I’m going to go ahead and assume he did know it, and chose to lie about it, because the Liberals are so desperate that they are becoming increasingly unhinged.

Of course, there is always the question of whether it’s ignorance or malice, and Gerretsen certainly seems plenty ignorant. But as cynical as I may be, I still can’t bring myself to believe that Gerretsen was unaware that Katie Telford had testified before committees in the past, or that he didn’t at least Google it ahead of time.

A government on the ropes

Even with the NDP running interference for them and much of the media beholden/sympathetic to them, the Liberals find themselves on the ropes in a way they haven’t been before – not even during the WE Scandal or the SNC-Lavalin scandal.

The reason for this is that while both of those scandals were serious and involved a high level of unethical behaviour, they were scandals about various parts of the Canadian power structure acting in ways that were seen as unacceptable. But at least it was all within our own country, and thus manageable with a higher level of ethical conduct (which we of course haven’t seen from this government).

However, the issue of China’s infiltration and interference in our core institutions is entirely different. It calls into question the legitimacy of our institutions and our government itself. It makes us wonder whether those at the top are serving Canadians, or are serving foreign interests. And it raises the possibility that a ruthless foreign political party – the Chinese Communist Party – is starting to have more influence over our democratic process than Canadians do.

The Liberals seemed to have been completely fine with this, seeing it as something that benefitted them. It’s only now that much of the world is waking up to the danger posed by China – with a significant shift in public opinion in Canada and other nations – that the Liberals realize how big a political liability this is for them, and they’re desperately trying to make it all go away.

So, as I said just yesterday we should expect to see more and more lies from the Liberals, and Mark Gerretsen’s easily-disproven claim about Telford’s testimony won’t be the last.
