Deviating From Trudeau’s Divisive Rhetoric, Liberal MP Admits Conservatives Support Ukraine & Says “Political Games” Don’t Help

Are Liberals starting to think of their future legacy, and thus distancing themselves from Trudeau’s cynical vision?

When a party is on the verge of losing, people tend to go in one of two directions.

They become more fanatical and ruthless in their attempt to stay in power, or they become more reasonable, more centered, and more focused on leaving a positive legacy in the time they have left in government.

Liberal MP Rob Oliphant appears to be taking the latter path.

For months, the Liberals have been attempting to turn Canada’s support for Ukraine into a wedge issue, despite Canadians across the political spectrum supporting Ukraine’s fight against Putin’s illegal invasion.

The Liberals continued to make those claims despite the Conservatives calling for increased provision of arms to Ukraine, and despite Conservatives pushing for Canada to provide over 80,000 rockets to Ukraine.

Desperate for any kind of wedge issue, the Liberals have politicized Ukraine at the worst possible time.

And it seems Oliphant has had enough of it.

Speaking in a House of Commons committee, Oliphant admitted that the Conservatives support Ukraine, and said political games don’t help:

Despite his party accusing the Conservatives of “turning their backs on Ukraine,” Oliphant said he doesn’t believe that’s true.

“I believe Canadians’ commitment (to Ukraine) is unwavering — and despite the political games we play, I believe the Opposition’s commitment is unwavering,” he said.

“I may get in trouble for saying that, but I really believe that. And we only get ahead if we do that, and don’t play games with this.”

This is good to see.

Every Liberal MP will likely face similar choices in the months ahead, choices between going along with Trudeau’s desperate and divisive attempts to stay in power, or speaking up on behalf of the truth and carving a path back to a more reasonable and unified nation.
